There’s nowhere in England – where I lived for over 35 years – that is more than 110 kilometers from the sea. And yet, I only went to the seaside a few times each year. Now, living in Vancouver, one of my great joys is living close to the sea. I love the smell, the sound, and the sense of vastness and wonder that the sea offers. It reminds me of God’s limitless love.

Much of Jesus’ ministry was to people who lived near the Sea of Galilee. Jesus called his first disciples by the sea. Jesus preached from a boat as crowds gathered on the shore. Jesus healed people by the sea. Jesus calmed storms and appeared to his disciples walking on water. Jesus often visited other villages on different sides of the Sea of Galilee. And, most famously, Jesus appeared to his disciples on the seashore, shortly after his resurrection, cooking them breakfast and telling them to cast their nets just once more after a night of empty fishing. I think Jesus loves calling disciples, healing the ill and demonized, speaking to crowds, and announcing his resurrection to people who live by the sea.

You won’t be surprised, then, to remember that the very first time Jesus speaks about discipleship, he’s walking on the seashore. Mark 1:16-18 says, “As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” Discipleship means following Jesus and being sent by him to fish for people.

I am excited because we live by the sea in this great city of Vancouver. So here’s a thought: because Jesus spent so much time among people who lived by the sea, we can be confident Jesus is working in the people you know and pray for in our city by the sea.

Today, ask Jesus to show you what he is doing by the sea, in Vancouver. And then “go get your feet wet” as you join him.

Grace and peace
