On the lapel of my jacket, I have three pins: a cross, the words “Jesus lives”, and a maple leaf. I am proud to wear the maple leaf. I became a Canadian citizen in 2005 and it's my honour and privilege to say I am Canadian.

I deliberately place the maple leaf pin underneath the cross and the words “Jesus lives”. I am proud to be Canadian, but my first allegiance is to the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In Galatians 6:14, the Apostle Paul says, “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.” Paul understands that though he lives in the world, it is the cross of Jesus and the resurrection that claim his first allegiance.

Canada Day approaches. We delight to celebrate our nation’s anniversary. But most of all, we remember that Jesus is Lord; he is the one worthy of our worship, devotion, and allegiance.

Let's pray.

Lord, we thank you for this astonishing, glorious, amazing, and wonderful nation. We thank you for the beauty we see from coast to coast. We thank you for forests and mountains, prairies and tundra, lakes and cities; for bear, beaver, and moose; and for people from different backgrounds. Thank you that we can all this nation “home”. Most of all, we thank you for our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us the gift of knowing him and serving him in this land. Lord, pour out your Spirit upon us and upon this nation, and bring men and women, girls and boys to you. And as we celebrate Canada Day, keep our eyes upon Jesus. In his name we pray. Amen.
