Last weekend, my daughter celebrated her 18th birthday with a party. It was a fabulous event, but required lots of preparation: food, tables, flowers, decorations, and much more. We are so grateful to those who helped to make her party such so wonderful. And we are so grateful to her family and friends who came.

A highlight for me was when I had a dance with her. I looked into her eyes and told her how precious she is, how important she is in my and my wife’s lives, and how much we want God's blessing for her now and always. It was a wonderful moment to share with her.

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday. We remember that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This Sunday is also Father's Day.

One of the most famous stories in the Bible is a story Jesus told. A son asks for his inheritance early. He goes to a faraway land and squanders the money. Then he comes to his senses. He realizes that he's blown it. He decides to return to his father's home, not as a son but as a servant; he doesn't think he's worthy to be a son anymore. So, he makes his way home.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate.

God's heart for you and for me is this kind of father's heart. He reaches out to you, he loves you, he cares for you. No matter what has happened in your life, no matter the struggles or difficulties you've faced, no matter the fears that have filled your heart and mind, God loves you and wants you to know how precious you are to him. Through his Son Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sin and is raised to life, he welcomes you.

This Father's Day, this Trinity Sunday, come and experience his grace and love. Come and worship the living God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Lord, we thank you that you are our loving, gracious, and compassionate God. Thank you, Lord, that we can put our trust in you because Jesus died for our sin and rose again. Lord, we have hope now and forever. may your peace and your grace and your love rest upon each of us. We thank you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
