If you have followed these weekly devotions, you’ll know that one of the cameras I use is fitted to a small drone. This allows ordinary people like me to take video that would have been impossible just a few years ago.

The drone can fly in any direction: it can go up and down, forward and backward, sideways to the left or to the right, and it can turn. The camera can also move up or down. It’s possible to film some amazing scenes, situations, and settings. Now, I can shoot panoramic video and overhead video that give a quite unique perspective - seeing things from above.

Seeing things from above reminds me of God’s sovereignty. God is Lord over creation, over time, over every event, and over all of life.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.

So says 1 Chronicles 29:11.

The thought of God being sovereign does, however, invite questions. If God is Lord over all, why do I suffer? If God is Lord over all, how can he have time to care for me? If God is Lord over all, how can I know him?

The Bible says that we live in a broken world, a world that has fallen away from God, a world where our sin corrupts us individually and together. In this world there is suffering. But this world – and all creation – will be renewed. No longer will there be death, mourning, crying, or pain. God gives us a drone view. In Revelation 21:4, the Lord says, “I am making everything new!” He’s sovereign and we can trust that he sees what we cannot yet see.

God cares for you and me precisely because he is sovereign. He has a drone view of each of us, so none of us is forgotten. Only a sovereign God can do this. 1 Peter 5:6-7 say, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

And just as a drone descends to focus on a small detail, so the sovereign God enters our world as one of us – Jesus Christ. John 1:18 says, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”

We can have full assurance in the sovereignty of God. As 1 John 4:8-10 say, “God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” It’s the drone shot of God’s love!

(Brief video Chinese translation):

Grace and peace
